It happens quietly. One evening you realise that dinner conversations have become logistics. Your child answers in single words, disappears into their room, and seems more alive with their friends or their phone than with you. You think of everything you’ve given them: the international school, the activities, the holidays, the home in a good community. And a question you never expected to ask arrives: when did my own child start to feel like a stranger?

If you’re a parent in Dubai feeling this, you are far from alone. And the distance is rarely about a lack of love on either side.

Why giving everything doesn’t create closeness

Many successful parents grew up with less. They promised themselves their children would never struggle the way they did. So they work hard, provide generously and protect their children from difficulty.

The intention is beautiful. But children don’t feel connected through what they receive. They feel connected through being seen, understood and guided. A child can have everything and still feel that nobody truly knows them.

There is another layer. When parents are stretched thin by careers and businesses, presence is often replaced by provision. The child learns, without anyone saying it, that love arrives in the form of things. And things, however good, don’t create respect.

What respect really looks like

Respect is often confused with obedience. A child who obeys out of fear may look respectful at home and behave very differently elsewhere. Real respect is something deeper: the child values your opinion, trusts your judgement and wants to carry your values forward, even when you’re not in the room.

Signs respect is wavering

  • Your child listens to you, but only when it suits them.
  • Your advice is dismissed, while a friend or influencer saying the same thing is admired.
  • Family values are treated as old-fashioned rules rather than shared beliefs.
  • Conversations turn into arguments or silence very quickly.
  • You feel you have to manage your child rather than connect with them.

These signs are not a verdict on your parenting. They are signals that the bond needs attention at a deeper level.

The subconscious side of parenting

Here is something many parents never consider: children absorb far more from who we are than from what we say. Your child learns about stress, money, conflict and self-worth by watching you. If you are anxious, overworked or emotionally unavailable, your child picks it up, however carefully you hide it.

Your own childhood is in the room too. The way you were parented created subconscious patterns that now shape how you respond to your child. A parent who was criticised often may become overly controlling. A parent who felt ignored may overcompensate with gifts and permissiveness. Neither is a choice. Both are inherited programmes.

Dubai adds its own pressures

Raising children in Dubai brings unique opportunities and unique challenges. Children grow up between cultures: the culture at home, the culture at school and the culture online. Parents may be busy building careers in a fast city, while helpers and drivers take on parts of daily care. Extended family may be thousands of kilometres away.

In this environment, it’s easy for a family to become a group of busy people sharing a home. Rebuilding the bond means being intentional in a way previous generations perhaps didn’t need to be.

Legacy is more than inheritance

Many parents in Dubai think carefully about financial legacy: property, investments, the family business. Fewer think about emotional legacy. Will your child carry your values? Will they come to you when life gets hard? Will they raise their own children with the same principles?

Wealth can be passed down in a document. Values are passed down through relationship. Without the relationship, the wealth often arrives in hands that don’t share the vision behind it.

Where to begin

Start with your own state

Before trying to change your child, notice your own patterns. How do you react when they disagree with you? What happens in your body when they ignore you? The answers point to the beliefs driving the dynamic.

Replace lectures with curiosity

Ask questions you don’t already know the answers to. “What’s the hardest part of your week?” lands very differently from “Why haven’t you finished your homework?”

Create small rituals of presence

Ten undistracted minutes a day, phones away, can do more than an expensive holiday. Consistency matters more than scale.

Take the scorecard

If this article touched something, take a few minutes to complete the free Child Respect & Legacy Scorecard. It asks simple questions about your relationship with your child and the values you hope they’ll carry, and gives you an honest picture of where the bond stands today.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my child feel distant even though I give them everything?

Children feel connected through being seen and guided, not through what they receive. When provision replaces presence, distance can grow despite good intentions.

Is a parenting coach in Dubai only for parents with problem children?

No. Many parents seek coaching to strengthen respect, communication and shared values before small distances become large ones.

What is the Child Respect & Legacy Scorecard?

It is a free online scorecard on the Quantum Leaders website that helps parents reflect on how much respect and connection exist in their relationship with their child, and whether their values are likely to be carried forward.
